In Your Backyard

In Switzerland, even the infrastructure gets a view.

The old Kander Viaduct near Frutigen, built in 1911, carries the railway across the valley on eleven natural-stone arches, rising about 92 feet above the ground. More than a century later, it remains one of the signature structures of the historic Lötschberg mountain railway.

But the part that makes this photograph almost absurd is everything underneath it: a perfectly mowed green field, a little wooden shed, and the mountains rising behind it.

Somewhere, somebody looks out their window every morning and this is just… in their backyard.
