A Bridge Through Lucerne 3

Few structures are as inseparable from their city as the Chapel Bridge — Kapellbrücke — and its Water Tower are from Lucerne. Built in the 14th century, the covered timber bridge stretches diagonally across the Reuss River, with the massive stone tower standing beside it like a sentry. It has survived centuries, including the devastating 1993 fire that destroyed much of the bridge before it was painstakingly rebuilt.

But history aside, this is simply Lucerne’s defining image — weathered timber, old stone, flowers, tiled rooftops and that remarkable blue-green water. Photograph it from one side, then the other, then from the bridge itself, and somehow it keeps giving you another composition. Some cities have landmarks. Lucerne has the Kapellbrücke.
