Rising above Passo Giau in the Italian Dolomites, Ra Gusela is the unmistakable stone tower that dominates this high mountain pass. At more than 8,500 feet, its sheer walls erupt from the surrounding landscape while the road twists through a sweeping panorama of some of the Dolomites’ most dramatic peaks. A fresh layer of late-spring snow made an already spectacular landmark feel even more immense.
The Sentinel of the Dolomites
From another angle, Ra Gusela stands almost alone against the sky, towering above the snow-covered pass and the small mountain refuge below. Its isolated profile makes it one of the defining landmarks of Passo Giau—a massive pillar of Dolomite rock that seems less like part of the mountain range and more like something standing guard over it.
