There is a point in every climb when the ground stops feeling like part of the equation. The Schilthorn cable car leaves the green floor of the Lauterbrunnen valley behind and simply keeps going — over cliffs, snowfields and a landscape that grows smaller with every passing second. From a distance, the cabin looks impossibly fragile, a little black box carrying a handful of people through an enormous wall of rock and ice. Inside, it’s transportation. From out here, it looks like an act of faith.
